Cape Wagtails are common residents in South Africa and are found singly or in pairs near water, vleis, on shorelines and in gardens. They wag their tails up and down on alighting or when standing, especially when they are anxious. They walk purposefully about foraging for food, sometimes running or flying to catch moving prey. Wagtails eat insects, tadpoles, tiny fish or food scraps.
